Frisian Flag 2008On the airbase Leeuwarden (in the north of the Netherlands), the recurring exercise ‘Frisian Flag 08’ was held between March 31 and April 11. The goal was to train the pilots and the aircraft in organizing and flying complex missions in an international context. It is an exercise ‘by pilots, for pilots’, therefore the exercises were planned by the pilots. And not by a ‘far away’ planning department.Aircraft from Germany (F-4F), France (Rafale), Belgium (F-16), Norway (Falcon 20) and the Netherlands (F-16, C-130) participated. Ground forces were participating too with Dutch army commandos and Anti-Aircraft sites. The Dutch navy participated with a frigate HMS de Ruyter as ‘sea target’. A combined airspace was arranged in the northern part op the Netherlands and Germany. During the exercise, the LINK16 communication channel was used extensively between the aircraft and between the ground stations. LINK16 was facilitated by the Dutch NDMC (National Datalink Managent Cell), a combined organisation of airforce, navy and army. Thanks to the Vlb Leeuwarden PRO and the LuVo.
